I was diagnosed with osteoporosis in December 2010 at the age of 49. Around June 2011, I started to have trouble swallowing and by August, was experiencing a burning pain at my breast bone which was particularly painful when I ate or drank anything.
On visiting my GP, it was suggested that the lining of my oesophagus had been damaged by the medication Alendronic Acid Tablets so was changed to Risedronate Sodium tablets, however, the same symptoms occurred.
I returned to my GP who suggested that I do not take any medication for osteoporosis if it is having this effect but to continue with the calcichew and omeprazole.
I have not taken any other medication for osteoporosis since September 2011 but am still experiencing very bad pains in my upper chest, left hand side and what feels like heartburn.
I am a bit concerned that if I do not take any medication for my condition, that it will worsen over the years and progress more rapidly. Could you please advise if there are any other options available to maintain my bone density and to prevent further loss?
There are other options to treat osteoporosis such as Vitamin D supplements, Hormone Replacement Therapy and drugs called Selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs), which have a similar effect on bone as the hormone oestrogen.
Have a look at osteoporosis in NHS inform health library for further information but definitely return to your GP and ask for further, alternative treatment.
Try to carry on eating healthily, limit alcohol intake and, if you’re not doing so already, take up some form of weight bearing exercise such as running or aerobics.
It would be worth going back to the GP to discuss what alternatives would best suit you and to get them to review your ongoing reflux symptoms.
