A disease or disorder is defined as rare in Europe when it affects fewer than 1 in 2000 people.
There are between 6000 to 8000 diseases which are classified as rare and they are characterised by a broad diversity of disorders and symptoms that vary, not only from disease to disease, but also from patient to patient suffering from the same disease.
Every February, rare disease day is held to raise awareness around the challenges facing people who have a rare disease. The theme of the 2012 campaign was “rare but strong together."
The awareness day is coordinated by EURORDIS, a non-governmental patient-driven alliance of patient organisations and individuals who are active in the field of rare diseases.
You can find out more about the campaign on the rare disease day website.
