David Hayman: My day out with Fred MacAulay proved to be packed with golden moments

Day four

When I heard how soggy the previous day was, my heart sank. But I was delighted to see the sun out when I met Fred at The Drovers in Inverarnan for our 19 mile walk to Bridge of Orchy.

So sun block on, we wasted no time in getting underway. Clear skies at the moment are a golden opportunity.

Speaking of golden opportunities, we met a 15 year old boy who was having a profitable morning. The boy, near Beinn Ghlas, was panning for gold and had already found £100 worth. Perhaps I shouldn’t say anything for fear of starting the Great Scottish Gold Rush.

We fell into step with a group of foreign physiotherapists who were walking the Way too. They offered their professional services but we were all in pretty good shape so we refused.

It wasn’t long before we struck gold again. As we passed by, the good folk of the Strathfillan Wigwams brought us bacon rolls and ice cream to help us on our way. A very welcome contribution to our STV Appeal effort.

There was still a golden globe in the sky when we made it to Bridge of Orchy at the end of a splendid day. We had a great walk with good company and beautiful scenery, but the real gold medal was that it will help the children in Scotland who live in poverty.
